Looking Back……
India’s growth story of the last five years was somewhat subdued this year owing to the global economic slowdown. However, the GDP is still expected to grow around 6.5%. Competitiveness remained CII’s mantra within the overall theme of “India @ 75: The Emerging Agenda”.
The year 2008 has been a busy, productive and eventful year for the CII Institute of Quality (CII-IQ). In its quest to enhance the competitiveness of Indian industry, CII-IQ continued its efforts in providing services to its members in the different areas of Quality and Competitiveness, namely, Business Excellence, Total Productive Maintenance, Food Safety and Quality, Education and Healthcare. In 2008, we were also able to offer some new services and training programmes, on more contemporary topics, to our membership. In this journey, CII-IQ reached out to around 3000 senior and middle level managers through various programmes and seminars on Quality and Competitiveness, at different locations, around the country.
Many Indian companies have also benefited from the consultancy services provided by CII-IQ in the areas of Business Excellence, Quality Management, TPM, etc. Through all these means, CII-IQ was able to serve close to 1800 companies in the year 2008 and we strongly believe that those who have participated in our programmes would have got some good takeaways to implement in their respective organizations.
Our sustained effort in spreading the message of Business Excellence in Indian companies was received well in 2008. There were 44 applications from the Large Organisations and Operating Units for the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence. For the first time, in 2008, CII-IQ promoted its services on Business Excellence to Small & Medium Businesses (SMBs). 33 SMB organizations participated in the Award programme this year.
In the area of Total Productive Maintenance, CII-IQ continues to facilitate the manufacturing sector, through consultancy and training programmes, to continually improve the productivity of Indian shop floors. The TPM Club’s growing membership and number of Indian Award winners bear testimony to the services provided.
In the area of Six Sigma, CII Institute of Quality, till now, has conducted 11 batches of Six Sigma Black Belt certification programmes in various regions. Thru these 11 batches, 362 participants from 120 organizations have been trained. 284 projects were completed by the participating companies and the reported savings were in excess of Rs.1460 lakhs.
Our endeavour to position India as a major global player in the processed food sector and to ensure safe and quality food in India continued in 2008. Various Food Safety and Quality initiatives were undertaken during the year, including launching of several new training programmes. The first-ever “National Kitchen Conference”, with the aim of building capability of Indian food processing sector, was conducted this year, to a great success.
To reinforce its commitment to the field of Education Excellence, CII-IQ organized various programmes during 2008 to help create a roadmap for excellence in schools. The Annual Summit on Quality in Education, organized by CII-IQ, focused on the theme ‘Quality Leadership for Future Campuses’. The goal of the national debate was to gear up the educational process by adopting a new Education Excellence Model where schools, colleges and universities could compete beyond a benchmark. In this context, CII-IQ launched a comprehensive Excellence Model for Education during the year. This Education Excellence Model is based on excellence models such as Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) and European Foundation Quality Management (EFQM). The National Summit on Education was followed up with a Regional Summit on Education with the theme “Creating Centres of Excellence: The Way Forward: Bring about Technology in Education Process”.
Despite India’s strength in the area of Pharma and Healthcare sectors, there is an urgent need for substantial and continuous improvement in providing training on Quality Healthcare and Pharma. CII-IQ organized various training programmes in these sectors through awareness creation, tools and techniques in healthcare quality and intensive in-house quality training programmes for pharma industry.
In its continuing efforts to provide a great opportunity for companies to learn and share global best practices, CII-IQ organized two TQM Missions to Japan, to participate in the programmes organized by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE) and Association of Overseas Training Services (AOTS).
CII-IQ also continued its offerings of several Management Development Programmes on contemporary management approaches and tools & techniques. 27 programmes were organized with the participation of 700 delegates.
Several new projects and initiatives were launched by CII-IQ in the year 2008, significant among them being Business Continuity Management (BCM) Standards BS 25999 in association with the British Standards Institute, UK and Lean Manufacturing Services with the support of JMS Consulting, Japan.
The flagship event on Quality - Quality Summit 2008 - was a resounding success. The Summit was aligned to CII’s national theme of India @ 75. The Summit brought into limelight new thoughts and approaches to Quality enhancement in three key sectors of the economy viz Industry, Education and Healthcare. The deliberations of the three-day summit were centered on three defining aspects namely People, Performance and Progress.
In many ways, the year 2008 has been a significant and eventful year in our Quality journey.
And, Looking Ahead……
I am privileged to have the support of committed and knowledgeable members of the Advisory Council who have given valuable insights and directions towards shaping the Institute’s activities and programmes. With their able guidance, the Institute has taken up several new activities, such as, Web-enabled Self Assessment framework, Application Research work with IIT Mumbai, a Quality Standard for BPOs, and, Road Safety Initiative with SHELL India, to name some.
All of us in Indian industry are aware of the current economic situation and difficult times of industry. However, CII-IQ is committed to continue to offer its services for industry to be more competitive.
The future of CII-IQ will see much more activities with new products, services and initiatives to benefit new stakeholders in industry and new sectors of industry and economy.
